The biggest and best holiday display in Livermore – and maybe the whole Bay Area – is set to open on Friday, December 4 at 6:30 pm. A holiday tradition now in its 34th year, this year’s display is sure to put everyone in the holiday spirit and bring back Christmas memories. The front yard of Deacon Dave Rezendes’ home at 352 Hillcrest Ave in Livermore, Casa del Pomba, is visited by tens of thousands of guests each year. The theme each year changes, and is always kept a secret until opening night ceremonies. On December 4th, the home and yard will be dark as a candlelight procession makes its way down the blocked off street. Members of the community are welcome to join the procession which will feature the St. Michael’s choir leading Deacon Dave and Santa and Mrs. Claus to the home. Also joining us this year is the Trinity Church of Livermore choir. Livermore Mayor John Marchand and a representative from Assemblywoman Baker’s office will be on stage awaiting the procession. The theme is announced, and the lights are turned on. There is a blessing of the lights then guests are invited to walk through the yard. It is a spectacular evening, a perfect way to get in the holiday spirit. Members of the non-profit group Good News Bears will help Deacon celebrate his special night by serving refreshments. Visitors wishing to support the group are invited to bring a new stuffed animal or cash donation to help them meet the ever-increasing need for “stuffed love” at shelters, hospitals, and emergency services. Last year, 2014, the theme was “Childhood Christmas Memories”. Over 403,000 lights highlighted the walk-through display that featured those traditions and memories so many of us grew up with. Uncle Bob was tangled up in lights, Grandma and Grandpa greeted family at the door, and Aunt Suzie was wrapped up in wrapping! Lots of toys and games were under the tree ready to be enjoyed, and even the family dog was in on the fun. A department store Santa was in the gazebo with eager children lining up, and Charlie’s Tree Lot was busy selling trees. Of course, this is all done with mannequins and props created by the volunteer team. They all share a love of the season and especially enjoy greeting the many visitors from around the world that make walking through the display a family tradition with memories of their own. “Our crew comes from all faiths and volunteer many, many hours because of the joy it brings so many people, and because they want to share the spirit of the season,” says Deacon Dave Rezendes, the owner of the home. “I started this display as a gift to the community when I was ordained 34 years ago and it has grown every year to reach more hearts,” he added.
Although the theme is a secret each year until opening, you can count on lots of fun, memories stirred up, and even, as many guests have told crew members, a spiritual feeling from the lights and love displayed. Each light is a prayer for peace, and visitors have shared stories of how the display has affected them. From finding peace in their heart after a loved one has passed, to the strength to cope with debilitating illness, to the power to escape an abusive situation, the display seems to have a power to affect guests in many ways, but the most powerful is the spirit of Christmas and love.
How many lights this year? What is the theme? You’ll have to stop by and find out! More and more LED lights are added each year. This year, each light is not only a prayer for peace, but for our veterans – those who dedicate themselves to peace and ensure our freedom to celebrate. Approximately 30 volunteers work hard throughout the year to put on the display. They are from many faiths, and welcome guests of all faiths. Be sure to walk through to gain the total experience. The crew members love to share the spirit of the holidays, and are often on hand to answer any questions. Just look for anyone wearing a red “Casa del Pomba” ball cap or jacket.
Santa loves to visit, and makes times in his busy schedule to stop by often during the season. Mrs. Claus loves the beautiful lights and story that is told every year, too, so she often joins Santa! He has told us he plans to be at Casa del Pomba on Saturday, December 12; Friday, December 18; and Tuesday, December 22. But you never know when he might stop by for a quick visit. He just can’t resist the glow! A secret hint: he loves to hear Christmas carols! His schedule is subject to change, as you can imagine. He has a busy season ahead! If it’s rainy, it’s a little harder for the reindeer to fly, so he may have to reschedule so they don’t get too tired for the big night ahead!
Deacon Dave opens his yard from the opening on December 4th until January 1st. The hours are 6 pm to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday, and from 6 pm until 10 pm Friday and Saturday. The gates may be closed during inclement weather, although every effort is made to leave the lights glowing. There is no admission charge. All the donations collected in the coin toss, ponds, and at the door are for Santa’s Secret Service. This program has provided a visiting Santa, carolers, and gifts to area nursing homes, shelters, and hospitals for over 50 years.
