LVCC CEO Dawn Argula attended the groundbreaking ceremony as local officials gathered on April 19 to officially start construction on the addition of a new lane on northbound I-680 between State Routes 262/Mission Blvd. in Fremont and 84 in Sunol. The new lane will be a designated Express Lane, companion to the lanes already in service in the southbound direction on I-680. Planning for the northbound project got started immediately after the southbound lanes opened in 2010. The $206 million for the new lanes is funded through multiple sources including $147 million from the Alameda County sales tax for transportation Measures B and BB. The I-680 corridor is a heavily used highway connecting the East Bay and Silicon Valley regions for workforce commute travel and for goods movement. Delivering regional transportation projects requires the collective effort and support of many organizations and local jurisdictions. The new lane will open in 2021.
